| KONGE-TINN PEWTER FLATWARE FROM NORWAY Put pewter on your table — and eat like a king! This “Royal Pewter” has a pattern that springs from events that took place in Norway almost 1,000 years ago. The Viking period was something more than an era of violence and barbaric customs. The Viking kings surrounded themselves with artists of various kinds, and it was a point of honor for the kings themselves to be able to handle a craftsman's tools. The sagas tell us that Olav the Holy himself carved the dragon's head on one of his long ships. “Olav the Holy and his men” — the inspiration of this pattern — introduced Christianity to Norway. King Olav fought tirelessly for this cause, and gave his life for it at the battle of Stiklestad, the year 1030 A.D. He was later canonized, and churches were built to his memory in many part of Europe. Fjord Design has been forced to increase the pricing on many items in the Royal Pewter line. The cost of raw pewter has risen astronomically in the past few years. The hollow-ware items, which contain the largest amounts of the metal, are the most affected. The second factor is the relative weakness of the U.S. dollar in comparison to the Norwegian Kroner. |
